Jeans that flatter [every body type]

We want to thank all of you for all of your support this weekend. The warehouse sale went SO well. We can’t wait to do it again–bigger and better!
Last week we asked you to tell us what fashion topics you enjoy reading about. So many of you love to read about styles that flatter different body types. We thought it would be most appropriate to start with jeans. But before we give you some resources to help you pick that perfect pair of jeans, the Recessionista has a few tips to share with you!
1. If the jean fits….it fits. If the jean doesn’t fit, try again!
There is nothing less flattering than clothing that doesn’t fit. If it doesn’t fit you, people will notice and you will feel uncomfortable. This goes for clothing– or in this case, jeans specifically– that is too big or two small. It’s interesting how clothing that is too tight can often have the same effect as clothing that is too large– both can make you look bigger than you actually are. Just because you can button those size 6 jeans (or just because those size 6 jeans don’t fall off), doesn’t mean that they fit. Our bodies change and with that our dress sizes change. We know that it can be expensive to update your wardrobe when your body size changes. We don’t recommend going out and purchasing an entire wardrobe just because nothing fits. We do recommend buying a few classic and versatile pieces (like jeans!) that fit you perfectly. You’ll look good and you’ll feel good. We really can’t stress this enough (it will come up again!).
2. Don’t drag your jeans (don’t wear them as high-waters either!)
Length is just as important as size when it comes to looking put together. If you are a short girl, you don’t want your jeans dragging on the floor. Not only does it make it look like they don’t fit quite right (even if they fit everywhere else), but it will also ruin your jeans. Hem your jeans ladies! This rule actually applies to all of your pants. When I was doing my undergraduate studies, I had a professor spend an entire class period on appropriate business attire. He made it a point to stress that your clothing should fit perfectly. No one is going to take you seriously if you’re stepping on the back of your slacks (or jeans) with your shoes. Not only are you bound to trip sooner or later, but eventually you’re going to poke a not-so-adorable hold in the bottom of your jeans. If you’re short, make friend with a tailor, learn to DIY or shop at stores that only offer
Let’s not forget about you leggy ladies. No one wants to buy (or try on) the perfect pair of jeans only to find that they sit just above the ankles. While you may be able to get away with just wearing flats if the jeans are a tiny bit too short, if they are several inches too short, you’ll need to rethink your purchase.
There are stores that carry short jeans and stores that carry long jeans. There are also stores that carry regular jeans that are better suites for the exceptionally short or the exceptionally tall (despite the fact that they lack that label). If you are having trouble finding jeans that are just the right length, don’t give up. Keep trying different length and different styles. It will happen for you. Want to read more about choosing the length for your jeans? Check out this blog post.
3. There are some things that no one wants to see
Regardless of whether or not low-waisted jeans are “in” where you live, there are some things you have to avoid in order to keep it classy. While you may be able to wear a shirt that is long enough to cover you butt-cleavage (we seriously can’t believe that this term even exists), you are still going to feel slightly (if not, more than slightly) uncomfortable. If you can’t squat down (you know, to be at eye level with a small child), without some unmentionables being exposed, you probably have on the wrong pair of jeans. Do the squat test in the dressing room. It will save you some mental (and physical) anguish later.
These are just a few of the Recessionista team’s tips. We’d love to hear what your tips are, where you shop for jeans, why you shop for jeans there and other other tips you can share about jeans!
We’ve done some additional research to bring you a few articles that talk about jeans that flatter different body types and the different styles of jeans that are out there. Hope you enjoy!

From the online store pictures, it looks like you only carry “skinny” jeans. Have you thought of sailor or wide legged jeans for the “hippier” women out there?

Buying a designer jean is an investment but one that is well worth it. They are tailored and help to fit better in all the right places especially so you don’t have your behind hanging out. I love to find jeans at Nordstrom’s because they have amazing customer service and are great with returns if something just doesn’t work out right.

I love April’s suggestion. I’m not really a skinny jean lover, and would love to see some wide legged. I was really happy to see the boot cut here.

I struggle with jeans as I have a well endowed behind. I have to usually buy my jeans a size bigger to fit over my booty & then they don’t fit my waist, but since I have tried different jeans I know now that it is possible!

I’m with the other posters, I look terrible in skinny jeans (way too much hips), bootcuts are so much more flattering!
What do you think of all the designer stitching? I love the look of the dark white line, but struggle with wearing anything but white up top to match it. Any suggestions?

I love the tips on here, but I have more curves than jeans would allow for. I can’t wait until you can extend your line with more jean types.

I love the tips…sometimes, I wear my jeans and drag them. I know…very bad. I like skinny jeans but I really love my lose and comfortable ones more.

I love this post! I used to be so scared of skinny jeans, but in the last year, I have bought 2 pairs and I love them! The last pair I bought is jeggins and they are super comfortable…I also LOVE bootcut jeans!

Whenever I find a pair that is PERFECT I always buy two pairs. It helps to know that I will always have something in my closet that I know I will look good in, and i wear through clothing so fast that its worth the investment for me!
I also try and get jeans in a darker shade, since they look a little more dressy (can that word apply to jeans? I think so.)

Good tips!I’ll be sure to try them.

I like jeans from the GAP. Their jeans come in different lengths, and they have many styles that are stretchy, which makes them more comfortable, and they look better on me because I’m curvy. Alot of their styles also fit women with a booty, which is important!

Great article! I especially love #3! Leave it to the imagination people! My biggest problem with jeans, and I know it’s common, is that my jeans fit everywhere but the waist. They’re always too big there! Any tips for that?
