Trend Watch: The Art of Scarfing

It’s a delight to receive the latest fashion advice from, not one, but two of my fashion gurus. Savvy Stylista was introduced last week and gave the approval to go for the gold and welcome back the 80’s by pairing hoop earrings and bangles with a trendy knit cap. And boy did she hit the nail on the head with that one. We sold out twice and have since been scrambling to restock our goods. Fortunately, we will introduce some different styles soon.

My second fashionista is Twiggy (known for her highly desired lean legs) and trend-setting style. She can easily make a statement without even trying. In fact, I think her neighbors are all slightly jealous of her impeccable natural style. Not only does she have the legs to die for but the hair to match: long, dark and luscious with enough natural curl to add the perfect bounce. Again, we’d love to hate her but we don’t.

Interestingly enough, they both had very similar things to say which, in my opinion, means they’re onto something.

2009 is the year of the scarf, largely in part of our national trend-setting celebrities. From Jessica Alba to Michelle Obama and even Brad Pitt, scarves have adorned every wardrobe. They are an amazing accessory that work regardless of one’s personal style or look. Likewise, they’re extremely affordable. Adding a scarf is a great way to update any wardrobe and add a little flair to an otherwise bland outfit.

The biggest rule with scarves, like any accessory, is to have it compliment, not compete with, other apparel. If wearing patterns, wear a solid scarf and when wearing solids, wear a colorful scarf full of zing. Also, keep in mind that the petite individual should never wear a scarf that overwhelms one’s size.

How to wear a scarf:

  • The knotted look is simple and accomplished by folding the scarf in half length-wise, wrapping it around the neck and pulling the loose ends through the loop made by the fold. This way will nicely tuck inside a winter coat. The knot size can be adjusted to fit the style or mood.
  • The looped scarf is one that works best with a longer scarf. Lay the scarf across the back of the neck, leaving one side longer and wrapping that side around the neck once or twice. Again, the loops can be adjusted to fit an individual style.
  • The loose knot is achieved by wrapping the scarf around the neck and tying it once.

Be creative and experiment with the scarves you own and don’t be afraid to try a different style.

Scarfing It…

While my fashion experts are all busy being fashionable, I guess, I am having this burning desire to proclaim my new found love of scarves. They are, in my opinion, totally (with a valley girl accent) hot. In fact, they are the perfect accessory for even the simplest gals.

But confessions first. Up until now, I’ve never understood the idea around wearing a scarf as an accessory. Paired with a winter coat or jacket in chilly or freezing weather, I completely understood. In fact, I have always loved scarves for that purpose and wear them religiously in colder weather. But, wearing a scarf as part an outfit, an accessory, just never made much sense.

I remember one instance, earlier this year, when I even make a really snarky remark to a sister-in-law as she admired and then purchased a lovely scarf “just to wear.”

Then just the other day, when a huge shipment of designer scarves arrived, I tried one on. Instantly, my attitude transformed. My seemingly boring white top and jean ensemble looked flashy and stylish. I will admit, I looked hot and only found it shameful that my husband wasn’t around.

So here I am, eating my words, once again.

Do you have an opinion on designer scarves? Love ‘em? Hate ‘em? I’d like to hear. And to the naysayers, be careful what you say because, like myself, you may be eating your words for supper!

Later this afternoon we’ll hear all about the “scarfing” industry from two of my fashionistas and how, when, where and why scarves are in right now.

Savvy Stylista’s Weekly Trend Watch

Fall/Winter Accessories

I will preface this post by stating that I’m not a fashion expert, not at all. While I don’t think I completely lack style, I tend to wear simply what I like and what works. And since I don’t live in a mecca fashion capital of the world, I tend to look OK. I do, however, have a hundred (alright maybe just 14) very stylish sister-in-laws and for the purpose of this blog, a panel of fashion experts, to which I glean advice and expertise.

One of my fashion gurus, Savvy Stylista, is really just that girl you love to hate. Her style is unreal and even on her worst days, she looks better than I ever will. She’s always ahead of the game which makes her a trend-setter herself. If she’s wearing something, instantly people approve. But we don’t hate her, we love her and here’s what she says are hot accessory items for fall/winter.

Knit Hats
They’re everywhere -all sizes, styles, shapes, designs. A fashion rule of thumb: If Hollywood approves then it must be “in“. Hats are a great way to frame your face, adding instant zest to an otherwise mundane wardrobe. Likewise, they are an excellent way to polish up the denim-look and give a boost to the winter blues. But remember, don’t tuck in all your hair. Leave some out to frame your face or allow your bangs to peek through.

Bangles

I don’t know if it’s the whole 80’s revival going on, but bangles are in – so in! And gold is the hot new color. Metal bangles are hot as well as the boho chic look found in earthy wooden or cork textures. A great way to wear bangles is to pair them with a 3/4 length sleeve. Mix and match, have a little fun. And remember, the more the better.

Hoop Earrings

Like the bangles, the big hoop gold earring is back. Everyone is wearing them. The hoop earring is versatile to any age group as they come in all styles and sizes. Keep in mind that they draw attention to the face so go a little easy with the makeup and other accessories. They work great with the Angelina locks or the short and sassy Rhianna style.

These three accessories together look f a b u l o u s and are an easy and affordable way to spice up any casual fall/winter outfit.
